Mercury in vaccines

Lewis Seiler/San Francisco Chronicle

The recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study on the relationship between mercury exposure and developmental delays, reported in The Chronicle ("Mercury in vaccines seems safe for kids," Sept. 27) will not settle the controversy for several reasons.

First, the study was principally authored by a former employee of Merck & Co., one of the largest manufacturers of vaccines in the world. Four other researchers involved in the study have also received fees from drug companies.

Mercury is a neurotoxin and therefore not suitable for injection into the bloodstreams of infants and toddlers. That's why Gov. Schwarzenegger signed the Mercury-Free Vaccine Act of 2004. In 1999, the CDC recommended "the elimination of thimerosal (a mercury-based preservative) as soon as possible."

The conclusion that the CDC study does not support a causal association between thimerosal and neuropsychological outcomes in children is misleading. In fact, the study was unable to prove either a presence or an absence of a causal relationship, according to Sally Bernard, the study panel's only consumer representative.

The study's many other flaws included: small sample size and low participation rate, failure to account for the effects of early intervention, and failure to analyze the significance of combined prenatal and postnatal mercury exposure.

Now ask yourself: As a parent with a small child, wouldn't you rather err on the side of caution? Let's follow the example of many other countries around the world and stop injecting mercury into our children's vulnerable bodies.
