AB 2943, the Mercury Free Vaccine Act of 2004, authored by Assemblymember Fran Pavley, is currently on the governor's desk awaiting his signature. AB 2943 would require that mercury above trace levels be removed from vaccines given to very young children and pregnant women.

Thimerosal, a preservative that is 49% ethyl mercury by weight, is present in many vaccines today, and will be in most of the flu vaccines given to babies, toddlers, and pregnant women in 2005. Ethyl mercury, a mercury compound, and thimerosal are known neurotoxins, and are considered by the State of California to be chemicals known to cause reproductive and developmental harm.

AB 2943 is a prudent measure that will make vaccinations safer, increase public confidence in the vaccine program, and assure parents that their most precious treasures, their children, are protected from mercury exposure when receiving a vaccine.
